Grant and Funding
The Free Library of Philadelphia received
funding for the Centennial Exhibition Digital Collection (CEDC)
in the form of a one-year grant from the Institute for Museum and
Library Services. The funding was specifically to provide access
through cataloguing, digitization, and presentation on the World
Wide Web of more than 1200 rare silver albumen photographs and related
original materials documenting the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in
Philadelphia.
The CEDC project objectives included:
- to put in place and test policies and procedures to preserve
the digital master files and assure timely migration of hardware
and software
- to provide electronic access to digital images for scholars
and other researchers through a web-accessible database
- to present a web site of images and narrative geared to students,
educators, and the general public
- to provide additional access by creating item-level catalog
records for the Free Libraryís web-based catalog with links to
the digital images and by offering collection-level MARC records
to the OCLC and RLIN databases
- to document the project and include project summary, methodology
and evaluation as part of the web site. Library staff also will
write articles and make presentations at professional meetings
to share findings of the project.
