Suggested Activities for Her Father's Tooth
- Mercer was nervous on a number of levels when giving her speeches. Have students discuss the reasons for her fears and aside from "breathing," determine what conditions would have to be changed to remedy her fears. Ask students to share the techniques that they employ to calm themselves when they give a speech.
- The issue of lying on both the part of a person who is a slave and the person who enslaves is discussed by Mercer in this chapter. Have students respond to this quote from one of Mercer's speeches: "What happens to people's minds under slavery. Black and white, both. No one is unharmed by this.”
