Suggested Activities for Strong as Death
- Mercer was extremely distressed by the death of and paltry funeral
for Nig-Nag. Have your students imagine themselves as Mercer and create
a more fitting eulogy for Wilfred in her voice.
- Ask your students to read the account, From Slave to Abolitionist/Editor,
to give them more information about slave catchers and the African colonization
movement. Have them discuss whether or not this account supports Wayland
Silver's depiction of William Lloyd Garrison.
- Including quotes from his speech, have students explain the message
Wayland Silver was delivering to his audience in this chapter.
- Sharkey cautions Silver not to be "Delphic" a term that
relates back to the Delphic Oracle. Have students research the history
of the Delphic Oracle and explain why Sharkey used this expression in
his conversation with Silver.
- Wayland Silver makes it known that there are differing opinions among
African Americans and whites about the back to Africa movement. Have
students research arguments for and against the movement. Select volunteers
to debate the issue.
- Yorubaland is mentioned in Wayland Silver's speech. Students can consult
http://www.motherlandnigeria.com
to learn about the history of Nigeria and the Yoruba population.
