Brief Afternoon Update on PA Budget and House Bill 1828

While a vote on House Bill 1828 has not be scheduled (as of the time of this posting), we are monitoring the situation closely and will share with you any news that we receive. Meanwhile, here are a few websites that periodically post updates on Philadelphia and Harrisburg activities - if you have an online source for new and updates, please share them with us.  Also check out Philadelphia Weekly's article (last link), which makes a strong economic argument for keeping our libraries open.

Get Ready for One Book, One Philadelphia!

Now for some positive news about the Free Library of Philadelphia (finally). The Library and the Mayor’s Office just named Marjane Satrapi’s The Complete Persepolis as the 2010 One Book, One Philadelphia featured reading selection.  Now in its eighth year, One Book is an annual city-wide program that encourages more than 10,000 people across the region to read and discuss a single book.  The program also serves as a reminder of the relevance of the Free Library, which is particularly apropos at this time.

We are all of course focused on advocating for passage of the state legislation that will prevent our libraries from closing, but at the same time we need to continue planning for the programs and services that make the Free Library such a vital part of our community. One Book, One Philadelphia exemplifies the type of program that adds to the quality of life in our region by promoting literacy, building community, and encouraging great conversations. And this year's selection certainly promises to fulfill the program's goals.

The first graphic novel chosen for One Book, The Complete Persepolis is Satrapi’s poignant, humorous, and heartbreaking memoir of growing up in Iran during a time of political revolution. Her first-person point of view presents readers with a unique glimpse into Iran’s political repression, the inner-workings of a family, and one woman’s experience as an outsider at home and abroad.

Want to be prepared for the One Book program kickoff on January 20? Start reading now—every Library has copies of The Complete Persepolis. And don’t miss your only chance to see Satrapi speak live in Philadelphia on Wednesday, September 23, at 7:30 p.m. at the Parkway Central Library—this event is free and open to the public!

Stay tuned for a complete list of One Book, One Philadelphia events, suggested supplemental reading and film lists, a comprehensive resource guide, and much more! And check back in right here for ongoing One Book coverage during the reading period—every week from now through January, you can share your perspective as we post discussion prompts on chapters of The Complete Persepolis.

Word Spreads of Free Library's Possible Closing

The news that the entire Free Library of Philadelphia system is in jeopardy of closing on October 2 has resonated throughout the virtual world. People are expressing their dismay over the loss of services and programs on Twitter and penning eloquent blogs about the role of public libraries in our society and throughout history.

We love your passion and deeply appreciate your support. Express your activist spirit by continuing to send the message to Harrisburg and our state legislators that libraries are essential services. Link up below and help us fight the good fight.

Library Facing Crisis

The current stalemate in Harrisburg over the two requests for legislation to help the City's budget will cause 53 Library facilities to close at the end of the day Friday, October 2nd unless this legislation is passed.  At stake are over 700 jobs, loss of access to information and resources including 800 public computers for Philadelphians and no place to go after school for over 80,00 students.

With almost 7 million visits annually and 22 million hits to its website, the Free Library is the most heavily used of all institutions in the city.  As the largest provider of internet access in a City where 41% of homes lack web connection, the Library provides the essential link to information, jobs and resources found only on line.

It is urgent that you contact your state legislator and demand an end to this boondoggle.  Philadelphia needs its libraries which are now used more than ever.  Don't let the folks in Harrisburg take the libraries away! Easy access to contact information is on our website at freelibrary.org
