Parkway Central Goes Green

Over the next month, a green roof will be installed on Parkway Central’s Beaux Arts building on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The project represents the first green roof on a city institution in Philadelphia and follows last summer’s roof replacement project. In addition to aesthetic benefits, green roofs—which consist of vegetation that aids in waterproofing, insulation, and drainage—help keep a building cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, as well as aid in storm water management and air quality.

The project got some “green” of its own yesterday when PECO joined H.F. (Gerry) Lenfest and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources as supporters of the project. PECO donated $50,000 and presented the Library with a check made out of moss.

The Library’s green roof will face Logan Square and encompass both the east and west sides of the terrace on the southern quadrant of Parkway Central’s roof. Moshe Safdie and Associates, the internationally celebrated architectural firm of the Parkway Central Library’s expansion project, is designing the green roof, which is expected to be completed in late September, 2008.

Mayor Michael Nutter has said that he wants Philadelphia to be one of the “greenest” cities in the country.  As the Library plans for the expansion of Parkway Central—which includes the addition of 180,000-square-feet of innovative, modern space—close attention is being paid to ensuring that the new addition adheres to green building practices.

I would certainly like to see more initiatives of this nature popping up everywhere in the world. Mother Earth really needs a conditioning, and small but significant events like this would help the nature repair itself and continue the survival of this planet. Richael

I think the going green movement is catching on... but it seems not as fast as I wish it could. There are so many ways to save the environment and I believe in the future we will really begin to see (and make) a better difference. Job search

The green roof is going to be absolutely gorgeous. I can't wait to get back to Philadelphia to see it. I think it's a wonderful idea and a fantastic use of space. The check from PECO is gorgeous as well -- how clever is that? I wonder what will be done with the check? Will it be "grown" on the roof? I think that might be fitting. In what other ways has the Library gone green? There's an article from a group call the Green Business Alliance (http://www.greenbusinessalliance.com) that has some good and simple ideas: http://www.greenbusinessalliance.com/blog/post/2008/09/Ways-to-Greenify-Your-Office.aspx Turning off the lights seems almost too simple, but it's been working in my office!

It's nice to see that so many cities and states are making strides to become more environmentally conscious. Even if it has only a minimal impact it certainly wont hurt.

Green roofs are definitely a valuable way to improve the efficiency of a building, not to mention the beauty. I think they are a piece of the puzzle in helping everybody become more energy independent along with other solutions.

I am all about going green. It frustrates me to no end to live in the South where even recycling is a foreign concept. If people can't even be bothered to recycle it is going to be difficult to get them into the more complicated going green initiatives. - Katy, Expert
