Please join us in welcoming the latest addition to Parkway Central's Philbrick Hall team. Patrice is the new Teen Center Specialist, and she'll be hanging out in the Teen Center after school Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

In her own words:

" I'm incredibly excited to meet you all as the new Teen Center Specialist for the Free Library Main Branch.  I'm a Philadelphia native and a graduate of the Art Institute of Philadelphia where my concentration was media arts and animation.  I hope to be able to bring a lot of my artistic skills and love for young people to the activities we'll do and the time we spend together.  I have a lot of things I want to share with you all about myself and I'm sure that you all have some things to teach me.  I'm truly looking forward to that."

March 10-16 is Teen Tech Week @ The Free Library of Philadelphia and we’re calling on all Philadelphia teens to take a minute to check in at their Library or Hot Spot. We have tons of fun programs this week all around the city from robotics to gaming.  But you don’t need to come to an event to participate in Teen Tech Week.  You can explore our website, to learn a new language with Mango, find us on Facebook and Twitter, check out a book about building robots, or just use one of our computers to message a friend.

Here’s some fun stuff coming up this week:

Monday at 4:00 p.m. - Gaming at Holmesburg
Friday at 3:00 p.m. - Gaming at Whitman

Whether it's at the library or over the internet, this is a great week to geek out on technology at the Library!

Hi everyone.  I am happy that I am having the chance to post some thoughts on Teen Tuesdays at Parkway Central before I transfer to Extensions and Children's Services.  I have been stopping by Teen Tuesdays on a regular basis for over four years at Parkway Central.  I'm amazed at how creative the programming has been and the response the teens who attend these events have given.  The amount of teens attending increases with each passing year and when we graduate high school seniors, high school freshmen begin attending, offering us the opportunity to meet new teens and make new acquaintances.  Keep up the great work.

Here's our calendar of Teen Tuesday events for January 2013:

January 8th: PLAY! Video Games

January 15th: (Book 2) Movie

January 22nd: 3D Pop Art & Duct Tape

January 29th: Draw.  Tell a story.  Design.

Teen Tuesdays begin at 3:30 pm.  Keep in mind, starting this month and until further notice, Teen Tuesdays will be in room 108 past the H.O.M.E. Page Cafe.

Look for other items on January's Teen menu:

Study Mondays and Tabletop Wednesdays every week in the Teen Center in Philbrick Hall and don't forget the following Make Thursday activities also in Philbrick Hall:

January 10th: Masking Tape Murals

January 17th: Collage Portraits

January 24th: Duct Tape Weaving

January 31st: Fabric Fun

And, the fun doesn't stop there: Fridays are now Hangout Fridays.

I'm going to miss all of you.

The Obamas at a bookstore.
The Obamas at a bookstore.

Can anyone tell which books Malia and Sasha Obama bought recently? Tell us your best guesses in the comments section. (Look at a larger version of this picture.)  Malia will turn 15 in 2013 and Sasha will turn 12. Now that the president has been re-elected, they will be 18 and 15 when they move out of the White House. They are the new First Teens of the United States. What do you think life would be like as a teenager in the White House?  They live with constant secret service protection and with their parents’ every move scrutinized. They are not allowed on Facebook (and, by the way, the Twitter accounts are not really them.) They also live knowing that while they are largely shielded from the public eye now, as they enter adulthood their lives will become more and more public. With the potential to become role models and leaders themselves, what kind of adult lives are they starting to plan? Media attention means power, and as Spider-Man learned the hard way, with power comes responsibility.
