10 Neighborhood Free Library Branches Will Be Open on Saturdays

Beginning Saturday, February 25, 2023, select branches will be open from 10:00 AM–5:00 PM
The Free Library of Philadelphia is thrilled to announce Saturday hours at 10 of our neighborhood library branches. Beginning Saturday, February 25, 2023, the following branches will be open from 10:00 AM–5:00 PM (with the exception of the April 8 and May 27 holiday weekends):

Pretty pathetic to say the least. Why do we need to pay overtime? Why not simply change the schedule for the employees - with ample notice of course. Feel free to leave if you don't want to work. Why is not the main branch - on the Parkway - not included? It's time for the staff of the library to understand that they work to SERVE us, and not themselves. Perhaps they are in the wrong job.

It's a crime that public libraries are unable to be fully funded just like the city (and states) public schools. Then they could be fully staffed at least 6 days a week like in many suburban areas. It's time we taxed the rich and reallocate resources to support public institutions and human needs. At the root of this problem is this country's continuing systemic racism and oppression of working and poor people in general. We shall overcome, someday.

I am happy for the Nicetown branch to be open on Saturdays, because I live in the area.
However, I am suprised that Parkway Central wasn't included. This Branch is the main
branch ; since its in the Center of the City.

OPEN the Main Branch on the Parkway! Amazing the public library who serves the public is not open when the public is available! Take a page from the Art Museum success play book that has built membership and sponsorship by knowing who their customer is and when they are available to visit. Close on a weekday and open on a Saturday. The current model is outdated and is contributing to the downward support for such institutions, which will result in more limited hours, closing locations and cutting jobs. Crazy you can't innovative management to make modernize.

Why can't the main central location be open on the weekends. I live outside of the city. I've had a library card since I was a child. I have utilized the branches. I mainly used the central main branch. I have more choices there, they have a great department of cookbooks and a music department. Plus getting inter-loan books. I have not stepped in a branch since early 2022. Especially if you work during the week and on a Saturday, I can't get to the main branch. Sunday's were perfect. They also had programs on Sunday afternoons. I know staff who loved working on Sunday's cause of the overtime pay they got. Think of students who need to utilize the main branch, plus you have that new area for the young people.... there are reference books that can not be checked out, and you can only utilized the library branch on the weekends. Central is closed! But open for weddings, big events.... think about your constituents.

It's great that you got the Fox Chase Branch open. But how about the Northeast Regional branch on Cottman. Maybe switch alternate weekends for the two? A lot of the community would be served by opening the Northeast branch. Especially during the school semesters. Good start, but till all are open or a majority of the branches are open on a week-end you'll only service part of the community. Even one day of the week-end would help.

I'm thrilled to finally see weekend hours (in any capacity) back in the mix. Are any of these locations my neighborhood library? Sadly no. Do I think the current model of weird week day hours is ridiculous? Absolutely yes. But this is a step in the right direction and I'm pumped. Hoping you get more funding, resources, and understanding patrons (looking at you, Bryan from the comments) as more efforts and plans are developed

Hi, I borrowed cash from the Phila free library and returned them all to the box at the South philadelphia drop box on the south side othe library ar Broad and Castle. What can I do.? I knowI returned them,
I lost some cash a few years ago and I wasn't able to borrow Nythinh for years. I am finainancially weak position. I know I returned them. All to that box. The free library a ry is supposed to.assist people like me or so I thought. Please help. I in a very weak position at the moment.

I am glad to see Fox Chase, the closest Free Library branch to where I live, on this list (although I had been using Bustleton and Welsh Road more in the later pre-pandemic era due to easier parking). But as others suggest, perhaps the Northeast Regional would have been a better choice for Northeast Philadelphia. Also, what about hours suitable for working people at the main location on Logan Square? Maybe a few hours on Saturday and 12-8 on either Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.

Great news for all !!! We as a family use the Richmond Branch. My daughter gets amazing homework help from Ms.Jean, we buy honey from their bees, Ms. Megan (the children's librarian) used to come to the playground where i taught (Cione Tot Rec) and my mom is an avid reader. It is a benefit for children of all ages to utilize our fantastic Free Libraries.
