Rhodesian-born British polymath Alexander McCall Smith is an Emeritus Professor of Medical Law at Edinburgh University, bioethics expert, lawyer, and amateur bassoonist and librettist for the Really Terrible Orchestra, which he, not surprisingly, cofounded. In his free time he has managed to write more than 50 books, including The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, which has been a bestseller on four continents and adapted into an HBO series by Anthony Minghella. McCall Smith’s other books include the 44 Scotland Street series, the Sunday Philosophy Club series, and a score of children’s books. Emma: A Modern Retelling is the “prolific, popular, and wonderfully peculiar” (The Independent) author’s decidedly contemporary take on the Jane Austen classic.
