Living something more like a dozen full lives, Jimmy Carter has been as much a shaper of America’s last century as a reflection of it. After an earnest but obscure upbringing in the rural South and a stint as a Navy submarine lieutenant, Carter rose to prominence as a state senator and governor of Georgia. Elected America’s 39th President in 1976, his administration championed national energy conservation, nuclear arms reductions, and the watershed Camp David Accords. In a post-Presidential career that has eclipsed even some of these accomplishments, the one-time peanut farmer and life-long fisherman has devoted himself to being a tireless worldwide peacemaker, advocate for human rights, and promoter of economic and social development. For these pursuits Carter was awarded the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize.
