What is the Reader Development Program (RDP)?
We are a department of the Free Library of Philadelphia. We give free books to adult learners and to adult education programs in Philadelphia. These books are for adults studying literacy, PRE-GED, GED and English as a second language.
What Do I Need to Get RDP Books?
To get books from RDP, you must have a Free Library card, live in Philadelphia and be at least 18 years of age. You can get a Free Library card at the Central Library or at any branch library. Bring identification with your current name and address.
How Can I Get RDP Books?
You can get books by visiting our office at the Central Library at 19th and Vine. You can also order books over the phone, you can pick up those books at the Central Library or we can send them to your nearest branch library. Someone at that branch will call you when it’s time to pick up your books.
How Can I Find Out Which Books I Need?
We can spend time helping you choose books if you make an appointment with us. Call 215-686-5346 to make an appointment. If you are in a class, ask your teacher to help you select titles.
How Many Books Can I Have?
You can have up to two books a year. They are yours to keep. If you finish with the books and they are in good, unmarked condition, you may exchange them for new ones.
What if RDP Doesn’t Have the Books I Want?
If the books you want are out of stock, we can suggest others. Otherwise, you can call RDP at a later date to see if your books are available.
When is RDP Open?
RDP is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. You can call or visit anytime during those hours.
