Information/Referral: The Mayor’s Commission on Literacy offers information and referral services for Philadelphia adults interested in improving their lives through education. Individuals 18 years old or 16 or 17 year olds who have officially dropped out of school. can easily access information about Philadelphia adult education programs by calling the Mayor’s Commission on Literacy at 215-686-5250.
Adult education programs in the city vary in size, the types of educational services they offer, and whether they are independent or affiliated with another organization. The Mayor’s Commission on Literacy maintains contact with education providers so that we are able to give potential students the best referral possible.
When you call the MCOL, a staff member will ask you for four basic kinds of information:
- Your contact information—street, zip code, telephone number, email address.
- What kind of program (adult basic education, English as a second language, GED preparation, workplace literacy) you are interested in attending.
- What days and times you are available to attend a class or meet with a tutor.
- What area(s) of the city would be most convenient for you.
Generally the MCOL information and referral staff member will give a caller three to five literacy agency numbers to call. Please have a pen and paper ready when you call.
