Adult Basic Education: Adult Basic Education (ABE) is instruction designed for adults that includes grade-level measures normally encountered in grades 0 through 8.9.  These adults show minimal competence in reading, writing, and computation; are not educationally competent to sufficiently meet the requirements of adult life in the United States; or are not sufficiently competent to speak, read, or write the English language well enough to allow employment with the adult’s real ability.  More than half of the adults who enter adult education programs statewide in Pennsylvania enter as adult basic education (ABE) students.
