Tutor Trainings: The Mayor's Commission on Literacy trains volunteers to become adult literacy tutors. Tutors are then paired with a literacy program and a learner in the City of Philadelphia. MCOL welcomes any volunteer tutor eighteen years of age or older who has at least a high school diploma or its equivalent.
The Commission offers the following basic training options for tutors:
- Basic Tutor Training-- Nine hours of training designed to give volunteer tutors a clear idea of strategies and goals for working with an adult learner.
- English as a Second language Training-- Nine hours of training to prepare tutors to work with adult learners who are speakers of languages other than English.
- GED Tutor Training-- Six hours of training to assist volunteer tutors to help prepare adult learners for the GED (high school equivalency) examination. Completion of Basic Tutor Training is a prerequisite.
