Title:
Strange Fruit
Format: Video
Notes: While many know the outstanding performance of the classic protest song "Strange Fruit" by Billie Holiday, not as many know it was originally written by New York schoolteacher Abel Meeropol under the pseudonym of Lewis Allan as a brooding reflection on a photograph of a Southern lynching. Filmmaker Joel Katz combines Holidays performance with recollections by Pete Seeger, Amiri Baraka, C. T. Vivian, Milt Gabler and others in this study of art, politics and civil rights history.
