She is the Robert F. Goheen Professor of Humanities Emeritus at Princeton University, and author of the esteemed novels The Bluest Eye, Sula, Song of Solomon, Tar Baby, Beloved, and A Mercy. Her new book tells the story of a self-loathing veteran of the Korean War who returns to a racist United States after enduring front-line trauma and emotional damage.
