Eric Kandel, the 2000 Nobel Laureate in Medicine, came to the United States with his family from Nazi-occupied Vienna in 1939. University Professor of Physiology and Cell Biophysics, Psychiatry, Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics at Columbia University, Kandel is famous for his groundbreaking research on the nerve cells of sea slugs, which sheds light on the basic processes of learning and memory.
