Bilingual (Spanish/English) Early Childhood Literacy Specialist – LITERACY IN EARLY LEARNING SPACES

Creative opportunity for an early childhood educator and/or early literacy specialist to implement the Literacy in Early Learning Spaces initiative at The Free Library of Philadelphia. This is a one-year grant funded full time position. You will join a highly collaborative team of four other full time Early Childhood Literacy Specialists, as well as the Project Director, who all launched this initiative in 2018. Position available June 1, 2021. Project ends June 30, 2022.

Essential Functions: 

  1. Provides technical assistance* for childcare facilities to enhance early literacy and language development in their Infant, Toddler, and Preschool classrooms;
  2. Presents professional development workshops* focused on modeling best practices for early childhood educators;
  3. Assists in hosting family engagement opportunities at partner child care programs*;
  4. Builds strong and trusted relationships with partner childcare teachers and directors;
  5. Cultivates and maintains partnerships and communication with childcare facilities, children’s and family service agencies, and FLP children’s librarians;
  6. Visits childcare programs* to assess needs and gather input from educators;
  7. Implements research-based assessment tools of early childhood facilities;
  8. Gathers, maintains, and shares qualitative and quantitative data for grant reporting;
  9. Delivers materials, such as books, flyers, and classroom literacy materials to partner child care programs, as needed;
  10. Performs other duties as instructed and assigned.

*All work – including technical assistance coaching, Professional Development sessions, and Family Engagement Events – is currently being conducted virtually from home. This work is intended to be conducted in person; as it is safe to do so, work will return to in-person implementation.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 

  1. Knowledge of Philadelphia’s early learning landscape and needs of early childhood educators;
  2. Knowledge of early childhood development, early literacy, and children’s literature;
  3. Knowledge of developmentally appropriate literature and early literacy activities;
  4. Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills;
  5. Ability to present to groups;
  6. Strong organizational skills;
  7. Knowledge and ability to model research-based storytime techniques that promote early literacy skill development;
  8. Ability to develop positive, productive relations with people in the community;
  9. Ability and initiative to work independently;
  10. Experience with conducting workshops, events, Professional Development sessions, or other in-depth programs in Spanish, with Spanish-speaking children, families and teachers.
  11. Familiarity and comfortability with using online conference platforms (such as Zoom);
  12. Ability to travel to and from multiple childcare facilities within Philadelphia.

Education & Experience: 

  1. Bachelor’s degree is required;
  2. Early Childhood teaching experience required;
  3. Or equivalent technical training, education, and/or experience;
  4. Fluency in Spanish.

Terms of Employment

  • Full Time (37 ½ hours per week)
  • Evenings and weekends as required.
