This informal group meets in a video-free private chat and image-sharing forum with a librarian from the Free Library's Art Department to discuss and be inspired by the different ways artists have charted and visually represented information. Join us if you are an artist looking for new ideas, to get some art-making prompts and a place to share images of the resulting work with others.

We started by looking at the e-book version of W.E.B Du Bois's Data Portraits, available to all Free Library card holders through Hoopla. Du Bois curated a landmark exhibit for the 1900 World's Fair in Paris, that included a series of ingenious graphic representations recording many aspects of the lives of African Americans at the turn of the century that are reproduced and discussed in this book. Artists like Theaster Gates have continued to find inspiraton in this set of graphics. All of these and the accompanying photographs selected by Du Bois for that same exhibit, now held in the Library of Congress, can also be viewed online.  

Cartographies of Time will be our other primary e-book text, and we'll be sharing many other visual resources on the subject as we go.
