Join us for a community reading group of W. E. B Du Bois’ classic novel The Ordeal of Mansart. W. E. B. Du bois was a public intellectual, sociologist, and activist on behalf of the African American community. He profoundly shaped Black political culture in the United States through his founding role in the NAAP, as well as internationally through the Pan-African movement. Du Bois was also a prolific author of both fiction and non-fiction. The Ordeal of Mansart is the first book in his epic Black Flame Trilogy. The Black Flame Trilogy is a work of historical fiction that following the life of Manuel Mansart, from his birth in 1876 until his death. As the first book in the trilogy, the Ordeal of Mansart chronicles Manuel Mansart’s early life during the time of Reconstruction through his involvement in Black education in Atlanta. Du Bois’ prose is lyrical and vivid, yet steeped in historical accuracy.
Our community reading group will read through the book together at a relaxed pace from January 10th, 2022 through February 28th; meeting Mondays at 6pm at the Walnut Street West Branch. Copies of the book are available for participants and high school students can earn community service hours by participating. This group is open to all ages, although most suited to adults and teens. Joining late is totally OK, we would love to have you either way. Discussions will be facilitated by Divya Nair.
