Join the Education, Philosophy and Religion Department for an online, interactive discussion inspired by My Broken Language, the One Book, One Philadelphia 2022 selection. In her memoir about growing up in 1980s and 90s Philadelphia, Quiara Alegría Hudes traces her own introduction to the Yoruba community, the Orishas, and the sacred altars in her mother's house.
This discussion will start with a presentation from Mike Hinson (Oba Ana Akinwale – the Owner of the Drum A Brave Man Returns) about Yoruba faith history and practices. Mike was initiated as a Priest of Sango in the Yoruba faith practices in 1992 and initiated to Obe (Knife) in 1994.
Following his talk, open discussion guided by My Broken Language will invite participants to reflect on and share their own spiritual inheritance and guiding beliefs. All are welcome to attend, and reading the book beforehand is not necessary to join the conversation.
Free copies of My Broken Language are available to particiants; please email firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange to pick up your copy from the Parkway Central Library.
