Meeting VIRTUALLY over Zoom, hosted by the Walnut Street West Branch
Our W. E. B. Du Bois Reading Group is continuing on to the next book in Du Bois’s Black Flame Trilogy. The Black Flame Trilogy is a trilogy of historical fiction novels chronicling African-American History from reconstruction through just after World War II via the life of one man: Mansart. In Mansart Builds a School, Mansart is elected to superintendent of Negro schools in Atlanta, and we follow his life and career until he comes to be president of Georgia State A&M College. Through Mansart’s eyes, we see the state of public education for African Americans in the early 20th century American South. All the drama and intrigue from the Ordeal of Mansart is built upon.
Join our Black Flame Book Club as we read through Mansart Builds a School at a relaxed pace and discuss the themes and ideas brought up by W. E. B. Du Bois and connect them to our lives today.
All are welcome to join us, teenagers and seniors alike. Free virtual access to the book is available for all participants. Registrations will be accepted until May 23rd. Register here.
