Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) is considered to be the Father of dramatic opera.  He invested as much time in crafting compelling stories and plots as he did in the operas that he composed.   In his work, the words and music are united more closely than in the works of thecomposers who came  before him.  Most Americans have heard his work, whether they know it, or not.
