Book arts workshop: Paper Theater Books
Art Department at Parkway Central Library
Inspired by Joseph Cornell's boxes and Rebecca Kelly's theater book, "The Monster Who Grew Small", participants will design and construct a theater book of their own!! Materials and tools will be provided.
Rebecca Kelly is a storyteller and visual artist. Her use of raw materials and narratives of her inner life remind one of visionary artists. Themes are hidden, letting the reader make up his/her own story in response to the work. Woven together in her work are several art forms: Ms. Kelly’s acting is reflected in dramatic choices of color or lack of color and her art often resembles theater sets or shrines. Rebecca’s storytelling is apparent in her use of words, sometimes she uses found words to create a collage poem or secret code and other times she liberates words from the page and the words become paper-mache dresses or birds. Like artist Lesley Dill, she uses poetry both inscribed in her books and as a source of inspiration while she is doing her work.
This free workshop is part of a series made possible by a partnership between the Free Library's Art Department and the Philadelphia Center for the Book. Space in these very popular free classes is limited; please let us know in advance if you will not be able to attend after you have registered so that we can release tickets to those on the waiting list.
