Eugene Feldman

Curated by Bill Brookover

Print and Picture Hallway Gallery,

2nd Floor April 28 - June 29, 2014

Eugene Feldman (1921 - 1975) explored and experimented with the offset press as his art medium. Starting in the early 1950s, he transformed photographic images into fine art offset prints and artist’s books by cropping, enlarging, and separating the photograph into layers of abstract form. These layers became offset lithography plates, which he printed with colored inks so that the photographic source of the image was became his own statement. Years before the Pop Artists silkscreened images onto canvas, Gene was transforming images of everyday life into his books and prints. He shows us places he loved: the Jersey Shore, Philadelphia’s West River Drive, and Venice. He shows us people he admired: Rudolf Nureyev, Jackie Kennedy, and Lou Kahn. And he shows us the world through his eyes.

The prints in this exhibition are drawn from the Print and Picture Collection, Free Library of Philadelphia.

Reception: Monday, June 16 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. in the Print and Picture Collection.
