September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland: The Federal Army of the Potomac, under Major General George B. McClellan fought a hard, ten-hour battle against General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. The battle ended in a draw, and both sides were so bloodied that neither was able to advance. This became the bloodiest day of the Civil War, with casualties amounting to more than 22,000 killed, wounded, missing or captured.  Bloody Tuesday: The Battle of Antietam will tell the story of the battle through the words of participants.
