Book Arts Workshop: Variations on the Simple Accordion Binding

Sat, May 19, 2018 10:00 A.M.
Art Department at Parkway Central Library

In this workshop taught by Rebecca Gilbert we’ll start by making a simple accordion (concertina) binding with attached covers. Then we’ll make a sewn multi-section binding that uses a modified accordion structure as the basis. If time permits, we’ll begin a third binding. You’ll quickly see that once you learn the basic concertina fold, there are countless ways to modify it in order to create new book structures.

Materials will be supplied and tools will be available for use by participants, but if you have a cutting mat, bone folder, or X-Acto blade of your own, please bring it along with you to the workshop.

Rebecca Gilbert works primarily as a printmaker to translate her drawings from the natural world into floating elemental reprieves - happy places that invite the viewer to slow down, live in the moment, and find optimism in that moment. Her work is characterized by a methodical technical approach to making art and a down-to-earth recognition of her own primal cravings.

Ms. Gilbert earned an MFA in Printmaking/Book Arts from The University of the Arts and a BFA in Printmaking from Marshall University. She also studied non-toxic etching at the Grafisk Eksperimentarium in Capileira, Spain. Her work is in numerous public and private collections. She currently lives and works in South Philadelphia and teaches at The University of the Arts, Maryland Institute College of Art, and Fleisher Art Memorial.

This free workshop will take place in Room 108, on the first floor of the Parkway Central library. Space is limited and advance registration is required:
