Monday Poets| Open Mic

Mon, January 7, 2019 6:30 P.M.
Literature Department at Parkway Central Library

MONDAY POETS at the Free Library of Philadelphia in 2018-2019 includes two open mic programs, one in January of 2019 and one in April. These will be dedicated to hearing from poets who may or may not have published their work, but either way want others to hear it. The poets will be heard on a first-come basis, and will be given five minutes to read their work.

In recent years the program has concentrated on two poets reading on the first  Monday night of a month; this season we have chosen these two evenings for the more free style approach of a microphone open to anyone who wants to read poetry.

We have heard  poets recite their work from memory, from a book or a sheet of paper, from a phone, display it on powerpoint, play a guitar to accompany it, and on one or two occasions, speak it aloud as it came to them (not recommended, but there is no law against it). The permutations ramify. So let's say this: if you are on time, cheerful, and prepared to read your poetry, you may enjoy yourself on one or both of those evenings. And others may enjoy hearing from you--if you do the best you can, with what you've got, in five minutes.
