In Julie Dash’s classic film set in 1902, a family in the Gullah community off the coast of South Carolina keeps ancestral rituals and customs of West Africa alive. As the younger generation prepares to make the journey to the mainland, the family faces a crossroads between past and future. In conjunction with the 7:15 p.m. screening, instructor Amy Corbin, Ph.D., will lead a Cinema Classics Seminar at 6:30 p.m. Purchase tickets to the film or film-and-seminar online or at the door.

This One Book, One Philadelphia event explores themes in the featured 2019 selection, Sing, Unburied, Sing, by Jesmyn Ward.
