The History of the PHS Philadelphia Flower Show
Since its first exhibition in 1829, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) has introduced beautiful new plants, inspiring design concepts, and innovative environmental practices to the American public at its annual show. Having begun as a modest display of fruits, vegetables, and flowers in a 19th-century Mason Hall, today’s 9-day show occupies 10 acres of the Pennsylvania Convention Center, and has blossomed into the world’s largest indoor horticultural event.
With rare images, behind-the-scenes anecdotes and fascinating background from the PHS McLean Library archives, Janet Evans will cover the history of one of Philadelphia’s most beloved and enduring events. Janet Evans is associate director, PHS McLean Library. She co-authored The Philadelphia Flower Show (2014).
This program is free and open to the public, but registration is required: https://phsonline.org/events/history-fs-jan2020/
This event will be held at Parkway Central Library, Heim Center East, 1901 Vine St, Philadelphia, PA 19103.
