A contemporary John James Audubon, ornithologist and scientific illustrator David Allen Sibley is perhaps North America’s preeminent birder and is the author of the wildly popular series of eponymous nature guides. Celebrated for its artistic avian renderings and concise, elegant descriptions, since its publication in 2000, The Sibley Guide to Birds has grown to four additional volumes. A contributor to such journals as Smithsonian magazine, Science, and the New York Times, Sibley has also written a guide to trees. A lavishly illustrated tome for the aficionado and layperson alike, What It’s Like to Be a Bird answers some of the most frequently asked questions about our feathered friends, including, “What the heck is that bird in the backyard doing?”
