The One Film Selection Committee has chosen Julian Schnabel’s Basquiat (1996) as the featured selection for 2009. The film follows the career of artist Jean-Michel Basquiat from his beginnings as a spray painting walls as SAMO to traveling among the decadent circles of the art elite. But despite gaining international acclaim, the politics and prejudices of the art market quickly teach him that the world isn’t as welcoming as it seems. Featuring Jeffrey Wright in the title role and supporting performances by David Bowie and Benicio del Toro, the film offers a piercing look into the life of a young artist who sought success and fame and won it—but at a terrible cost.
One Film is a partner program of One Book, One Philadelphia and promotes film education, library usage and community building by engaging Philadelphians in critical discussion and analysis of the annual featured film. Now in its second year, One Film program runs from February 18 through March 11, 2009.
One Film would like to thank its many sponsors and supporters without whom this program would not have been possible.
This year’s program will feature screenings across the city and discussions on contemporary art, graffiti, the film industry, and more—keep an eye on this page for updates!
