Summer is a great time to visit the Free Library! For children and teens, a summer at the library forms a bridge between grade levels so that learning doesn't stop when the weather heats up. Visit the library or participate online for a summer full of fun books and activities. After a Summer of Wonder, students will return to school excited to learn and ready for the school year.

From June 11 through August 3 children and teens from birth to 12th grade can sign up at their neighborhood library. Get inspired with fun activity ideas and programs, earn prizes, and see what you can discover, read, and make this summer!

And because kids shouldn't have all the fun, adults can dive into Summer of Wonder too! Adults can participate at select neighborhood libraries, where there will be special raffles for reading, attending library events, and more.

Online Summer of Wonder for all ages runs June 1 through August 31. Sign up online and earn badges by tracking minutes read and completing fun Discovery Path activities themed around STEAM, literacy, and exploration. You can also select reading materials from School District of Philadelphia suggested booklists, submit book reviews, and explore more in-depth themed learning guides. Every time you earn a badge, you will be entered into a weekly raffle with prizes for each age group, as well as be entered into a special grand finale prize raffle that will take place at the end of summer!

The goal of the Summer of Wonder program is to encourage all Philadelphians to read for fun and to explore learning opportunities during the summer months. Summer of Wonder also helps children and teens combat "summer slide", so that they can return to school in the fall ready to learn! Summer of Wonder also plays an integral part in our Read by 4th campaign, a citywide effort of 50 organizations, public and private, large and small, convened and managed by the Free Library of Philadelphia, aiming to have 97% of students in Philadelphia entering the 4th grade at reading level by 2020. This is the largest effort of its kind in the city of Philadelphia. Learn more at
