The Free Library of Philadelphia enriches our city and region. People of all ages and backgrounds value our branches as havens for learning, cultural activities, and social interaction. A library is a safe space where people, ideas, and communities can grow.

The City of Philadelphia provides public funds for the operations of the Free Library, and through the generosity of private funding from individuals, foundations, and corporations, the Free Library Foundation supports many of the Library's incredible programs and activities that advance literacy, guide learning, and inspire curiosity throughout the region.

The Impact of Your Gift

As a young man, Peter was involved with a gang. One day, he came to Parkway Central Library’s Music Department and found a recording of West Side Story. He checked it out on a whim, forever changing his life. After falling in love with the musical, Peter spent much more time in the Library—to the point that he was kicked out of his gang. He went on to serve in the Marines for over 20 years.
