Since Parkway Central Library opened in 1927, patrons have had free and open access to its rich and unique collections, expanding services, and professionally trained and welcoming staff. The robust programs and collections available are impressive, but some patrons may not be familiar with all of them. To promote these resources, we've asked library staff to highlight their subject departments and the patron resources they offer to help shed light on all the benefits of becoming a patron of the Free Library of Philadelphia.
Until just a few years ago, the young adult collection at Parkway Central Library was limited to a handful of fiction shelves in the back corner of Philbrick Hall. Quiet crafts were conducted at a nearby table, and once a week, teens could enjoy snacks and board games in an unused meeting room. All of that changed in 2018 when Field Teen Center was created as the premier space for youth ages 12 to 18.
Today, five years in, the Teen Center boasts over 7,000 titles with something for everyone. Our manga collection includes more than 200 series, including both brand-new titles and the latest volumes of your longtime favorites. Our graphic novel shelves include DC and Marvel superheroes, as well as webtoons and standalone graphic novels. Our fiction shelves collect the latest BookTok hits and young adult classics, ranging from Twilight to Truly Devious to The Hate U Give and so much more. On the nonfiction shelves, visitors can find titles about tarot, managing money, poetry, cooking, test prep, and beyond. Field Teen Center is also home to the Free Library’s first and only collection of Spanish language books, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and graphic novels — with more to come.
However, the Teen Center is so much more than the books on its walls. Above all, it’s a fun and safe hangout space where teens can be themselves and make new friends. First-time visitors will immediately notice the four extra-large Pride flags hanging around the room (including one designed by a teen!). Upon closer look, they may also discover the self-care station, where youth can take sanitary supplies and other free items as needed, no questions asked. During after-school hours, teens can find something different to do each day, from video games to karaoke to phone case decorating. If you listen, you’ll find teens talking about their favorite fandoms, art, and most importantly, memes!
