Learning a new language doesn't have to feel like a chore! The Free Library recently partnered with Lingopie — a language-learning platform that combines thousands of real TV shows and movies with built-in tools that turn streaming entertainment into fun language lessons.
Lingopie currently offers content in Spanish, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Dutch, and Turkish, with Greek, Polish, and more coming soon. Lingopie’s user interface is available in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, German, and Italian.
Dual subtitles are available in your preferred language, the show’s original language, or both simultaneously. You get an instant translation, the definition of each word, and grammatical context. Words can be added to your vocabulary list and flashcard deck, which you can revisit in the Review and Practice section with pop quizzes and games. You can even practice speaking and listening in live group lessons on Discord.
If you have an existing subscription to Netflix or Disney+, Lingopie offers a browser extension that allows the dual subtitles to work with select titles. Learning a language is finally binge-worthy!
Access Lingopie from the Free Library’s database page and sign up for a free account using your library card number and PIN. Enjoy unlimited access on the web, iOS, and Android apps, and Android-supported smart TVs.
