With the recent theft of some taxpayers’ personal information, and an even more recent data breach of federal employees’ information, it’s no wonder the U.S. Government is taking an interest in identity theft. The Federal Trade Commission has set up a new website, identitytheft.gov, a comprehensive resource for anyone coping with such fraud.
The site offers a series of checklists, explaining how to limit and repair any credit damage, and who to contact (and how to contact them) at every step. The website also offers templates for writing letters to credit card and other companies, credit bureaus, and debt collectors; and an overview of what your rights and responsibilities are.
