Lynda.com: A New Online Learning Experience from the Free Library

By Jamie W. RSS Tue, September 5, 2017

The Free Library of Philadelphia is pleased to announce that beginning today we will offer free access to Lynda.com with your library card!

Lynda.com is an online training and learning tool for business, software, technology, and creative skills. Offering over 10,000 training and development courses taught by industry experts, Lynda.com offers tutorials in five languages. You will find courses and training videos on everything from web design to media production, management to entrepreneurship, Photoshop to guitar, and much more. Take a look at some of the new content Lynda.com is excited about in the short video below:

These lessons and videos go far beyond what you might find on You Tube and are a great way to keep learning even when you can't get to the library in person. Lynda.com is available with your library card from your home or mobile device - anywhere you access the internet!  Get started with Lynda.com from our database page or our Digital Learning Portal

The first time you visit Lynda.com, you will be asked for your library card number and PIN (if you're new to the Free Library, you can request a library card online. If you are a current cardholder and have forgotten your library card or PIN number(s), you can retreive that information online as well). You will then be invited to register with Lynda.com using your name and email address. At this point, you're ready to begin learning!

Enjoy Lynda.com and let us know what you think of this new resource in the comments below.

I'm having problems accessing Lynda.com through both the database and digital learning portal. My Library card number and pin work fine to log into freelibrary.org, Libby & Hoopla, but Lynda.com is telling me "Your request could not be processed. Check your card and PIN and try again. If problems persist, contact your library."

Do we have access to Lynda on their iOS apps? I cannot figure out how to log in, or to get my account info to get the right info... I get the message: Your IP address is not associated with an active Lynda.com account. COntact your administrator or call (Lynda's number). Any suggestions?

Hello Jesse - yes, once you register as a Lynda.com user with the Free Library you can use the mobile app. However, you must begin by visiting Lynda.com through the link on the library's website and creating a username/password. Then you can add the app and register it with the same login credentials.

I have an expectation of privacy when I use government resources. I don't want my info being shared with commercial enterprises. I'd prefer the library stop adding more commercial data-mining enterprises into library services and resources. It's one thing to have media in your catalog. It's another to embed them library services and in direct me to commercial materials on linkdin, google, facebook, etc. and to require me to share my info with google, etc. etc. to use library resources.

I'm a huge fan of Lynda.com and had used it in the past to study a variety of subjects. I had to cancel my membership due to the cost. I couldn't be happier that the service is available for cardholders now!! Thank you so much. I have a lot to learn, and this will definitely come in handy.

Hi Margie C, - to get started, you need to go to our database page and choose Lynda.com from the list of resources we offer. Here is the link: http://libwww.freelibrary.org/databases/index.cfm - Once you click the link to Lynda there, we'll ask for your library card number and PIN. At this point you should be redirected to the full Lynda.com site. Click the 'Sign Up' link at the upper right of the screen to register and get started. If you have trouble, use the Contact Us at the bottom of this page to send an email and one of our librarians can work with you over email. Thanks!

Hello - has there recently been a change in the library's subscription to Lynda? I am unable to log in as of July 28, 2019 through the database page and choosing Lynda as described in the Feb 27 2019 post. When I try to log in the usual way with library card number and pin, and it leads me to the Lynda/LinkedIn learning home page but without actually logging in. Did the library's subscription become affected by the transition of Lynda to LinkedIn Learning? Any help is appreciated, thank you.
