The Free Library advances literacy, guides learning, and inspires curiosity.
The Free Library advances literacy, guides learning, and inspires curiosity.

In July, the Free Library launched its new strategic plan for the next three years. This plan is a refresh of our prior five-year plan and keeps the same mission:

Advance literacy, guide learning, and inspire curiosity

and vision:

Building an enlightened community devoted to life-long learning

The mission and vision are supported by three overarching goals, encompassing the work we want to build on and advance in the coming years. These three goals are simple and to the point:

  • Build a Culture of Literacy in Philadelphia
  • Deliver an Exceptional Customer Experience
  • Embrace Creativity and Innovation

Watch the following video to get a better sense of our work and how we’ll measure our progress.

The Free Library is committed to serving all Philadelphians, and now we have the plan to do just that over the next three years!

Why are we still referring to people--Philadelphians-- as customers? Are we selling a good? Is the relationship of the library to the people good only in so much as a profitable interaction? Surely we could think of a more humanizing term

I really like the new vision and mission of the Free Library of Philadelphia . In addition to the above I would like to see library promote an support Tre democracy by being a place where Candidates must list their record and what they stand for so people can see transparently for themselves. , I think we need to put an end to political ad. We are talking about the lives of thousands of people and that cannot be dependent on how ell someone can sell themselves or how much money they have .

I am a regular patron of the Free Library and I am impressed with all the ways the library provides for the community from offering various types of classes to digital learning and its ongoing commitment to improve on its history of excellence. Without the library, I would truly be lost. Thank you to all the hard working staff who makes the services possible.

I love the Free Library of Philadelphia and think that it is one of the rare places where the mission is clearly evident in the practice! The many quality programs and initiatives that are sponsored also ecourage respect, engagement and tolerance. I grew up during a time when Philadelphia was quite racially polarized and traveling to the nearest library (just past "the line") typically included enduring taunts, threats & bodily harm. Thus, I especially appreciate the care and attention given to neighborhood libraries. Thanks for everything!
