In our ongoing series of blog posts highlighting our awesome staff throughout the Free Library of Philadelphia, today we take some time to speak with Dennis Mawson of our Materials Management department.

What is your role with the Free Library of Philadelphia?
I’m an LA1 Processor in the Materials Management division. I work to prepare the high demand new titles for filling holds in our neighborhood libraries as well as preparing other new purchases for circulation, and occasionally clean up old collections while libraries undergo renovations.

What do you wish more people knew about the library where you work?
I wish more people knew that every library location is its own living, breathing creature. Every library offers different services to cater to their communities. Every library has its own soul, and you can step into any of them and be welcome. They’re staffed by people who put the needs of the public above all else, just how a public service should be.

What is the most satisfying aspect of your job?
The most satisfying aspect of my job is being able to give people something they need without them having to give anything in return. I can help people to learn, grow, and prosper, and it doesn’t cost them a thing. There’s nothing comparable to knowing someone got what they need, when they needed it, and that you’re the one responsible.

What are you currently reading/watching?
I’m currently reading The Gulag Archipelago by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, as well as making my way through the Free Library’s large Isaac Asimov and H.P. Lovecraft collections. I’ve just finished watching the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and the latest season of The Great British Baking Show on Netflix.

Where’s your favorite place to read in Philly?
My favorite place to read, besides my own home, is on a long SEPTA commute, or in a nice quiet corner in a library.
