Stories to Share for Mother's Day

By Leigh U. RSS Fri, May 8, 2020

Although most of us will be staying home this Mother’s Day, what better way to celebrate than by enjoying breakfast in bed and cuddling up to share stories with the ones we love? The Overdrive Kid’s eReading Room has great options for stories about moms and caregivers. Here are a few picture books that adults and kids will love to read together:

Saturday by Oge Mora
Saturday is the one day of the week that Ava's mother doesn't go to work. This Saturday, the two have big plans, but it seems that nothing can go right! Just as Ava's mother thinks the day is ruined, Ava reminds her why Saturdays are so special: because they are together. The love between mother and daughter is palpable in this sweet story, and Mora's collage illustrations add cheer and excitement.

Ol’ Mama Squirrel by David Ezra Stein
Mama Squirrel will do whatever it takes to protect her babies, but when a hungry bear finds its way to her tree, Mama Squirrel will need to call for reinforcements. It truly takes a village! This humorous tale is matched by Stein’s cartoon-style illustrations, and the onomatopoeia of Mama Squirrel’s scolding chatter makes it a great read-aloud.

Just Like a Mama written by Alice Faye Duncan; illustrated by Charnelle Pinkney Barlow
Although Mama Rose isn’t Carol Olivia Clementine’s biological mother, she cares for her just as deeply. This warmly illustrated picture book draws from the author’s own experience with kinship adoption and shows that love knows no boundaries.

Mommy’s Khimar written by Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow; illustrated by Ebony Glenn
There’s no end to how the young protagonist of this story imagines herself while wearing her mother’s khimar, or headscarf. She’s a queen, a superhero, a mama bird! The young girl feels comforted by the khimar even when her mother is away. The sunny, flowing illustrations convey how the khimar connects the girl to her mother and her community.

Mama’s Kisses written by Kate McMullan; illustrated by Tao Nyeu
It’s time for bed! The animal mamas of the jungle need to get their babies ready for sleep, but the babies have other plans. The calming, cool palette and lullaby ending make this a cute choice for the end of the day.
