Here are five ebook and audiobook titles about identity, acceptance, love, and loss to consider this month as we celebrate those journeys with our friends, families, and ourselves.

King and the Dragonflies by Kacen Callander
(Ages 8-12)
An intense tale of love, loss, and friendship as a young man struggles to realize his dreams and find his identity.

The Unbelievable Oliver and the Sawed-In-Half Dads by Pseudonymous Bosch
(Ages 7-10)
Aspiring magician Oliver turns detective again (see The Unbelievable Oliver and the Four Jokers for Oliver’s first turn at detecting) when a groom goes missing on his wedding day. The dads of Oliver's best buddies, Beatriz and Martina, are getting married at last and everyone's excited... except Simon, one of the grooms, who disappears shortly after being sawn in half by Oliver during the rehearsal brunch at Hauntington Gardens. Is it a case of cold feet or something more nefarious?

A High Five for Glenn Burke by Phil Bildner
(Ages 8-12)
Baseball-obsessed 6th grader Silas begins his journey to self-acceptance with a school presentation on Glenn Burke—the 1970s Black baseball player who invented the high-five, who was gay, and whose real-life story did not have a happy ending. After the presentation, Silas comes out to his best friend, Zoey, and to his favorite baseball coach. Then things get complicated when a couple of his teammates use "gay" as an insult, and Silas finds himself lying that Zoey is his girlfriend. A personal novel that drives home the message that there’s no one way to come out―and there’s a place in the field for everyone.

Middle School’s a Drag, You Better Werk! by Greg Howard
(Ages 9-14)
Mikey has started Anything, Inc., and business takes off when he becomes a talent agent for several of his classmates, including Julian, a boy who performs drag as Coco Caliente, Mistress of Madness and Mayhem. Mikey schemes to assist Coco and his other clients in entering the school's talent show in the hopes of sharing a piece of the $100 prize. To learn what it really means to be yourself, Mikey navigates school bullies, disapproving parents, and a little sister who is really annoying, but making his entrepreneurial grandfather proud motivates him to persevere.

The Ship We Built by Lexi Bean
(Ages 10-14)
A young trans boy, Rowan, is finding himself in a world where fitting in feels wrong and seeking friendship seems impossible. Queer and trans author Lexi Bean brings tremendous sensitivity to the tale of a young child exploring their identity and experiencing abuse. Rowan’s more mature narrative is balanced by his fears and interactions with classmates as his letters become more relatable and heartbreaking. Bean provides a beautiful story for any child experiencing uncertainty, and for those who can't relate, Rowan's story creates an avenue for understanding and empathy.
