I’m a dog person (but hey, I love cats too!). I love all animals, really, but I do have a soft spot for dogs: big or small, young or old, even the cranky ones. Dogs never fail to make me feel better. Whenever I’m on a walk, I ask passing humans if it’s okay for me to greet their dogs.

I’ve blogged about dogs in the past, and I figured it was time to do it again—this time in honor of National Dog Day!

From Wolf to Woof: The Story of Dogs by Hudson Talbott
How did dogs become man’s best friend? Dogs come in such a variety of shapes, sizes, and breeds, that it is hard to believe that they all have a common ancestor—the wolf! This book takes readers on a fascinating journey through history to see how wolves’ relationships with humans sparked their development into the dogs we know and love today.

Poojo’s Got Wheels by Charrow
What a good dog Poojo is! He’s a great friend to everyone and everything (pigeons and scooters included). He’s creative and clever (how many other dogs can pop a wheelie?). And he definitely is fast—look at him chasing that squirrel, or leading his doggie pals in a race through the park! There’s no stopping this joyful pup, even when he’s briefly faced with a flat tire. Poojo can do anything!

Stormy: A Story About Finding a Forever Home by Guojing

ebook available from Overdrive

In this heartwarming, wordless picture book that’s perfect for dog lovers, a woman visits a park and discovers a pup hiding under a bench—scruffy, scared, and alone. With gentle coaxing, the woman tries to befriend the animal, but the dog is too scared to let her near. Day after day, the woman tries—and day after day, the dog runs away. With perseverance and patience—and help from an enticing tennis ball—a tentative friendship begins. But it’s not until a raging storm forces the two together that a joyous and satisfying friendship takes hold. Guojing poignantly explores how trust doesn’t always come easily, but how, over time, and with kindness and determination, forever love can grow.
