Warning: Library Scam Phone Call

By Administrator RSS Wed, August 23, 2023

If you receive a random phone call from an individual who says they are with the library and that you owe money: this is a scam. Hang up the call immediately and block the number if possible. Remember, the Free Library of Philadelphia will never ask you to give out your financial information over the phone.

The Free Library has received reports of misleading phone calls from individuals pretending to be affiliated with the library to solicit financial information from patrons over the phone. The Free Library is very protective of patron data, including contact information, and urges users to remain vigilant to protect themselves against these types of predatory callers.

Keep in mind these tips when you receive a suspicious phone call:

  • Do not confirm your identity until you know who is calling.
  • Check the legitimacy of the agency, organization, or business calling you by searching their name online while on the phone.
  • Never disclose personal information, account information, or passwords over the phone.
  • Do not go to any websites that the caller prompts you to, as these could have viruses.

For more information regarding phone scams, check out the Federal Trade Commission's website.
