Happy Library Card Signup Month!

By Bridget G. RSS Fri, September 1, 2023

As the leaves begin to change and the air turns crisp, September arrives with a delightful reminder that it's not just a month of transition from summer to fall — it's also Library Card Signup Month! This annual celebration is a reminder of the importance of libraries in our communities and the invaluable resources they offer to advance literacy, guide learning, and inspire curiosity!

Don't have a library card yet? Signing up for one is easy! A Free Library card is available at no cost to anyone who lives, works, pays taxes, or goes to school in the City of Philadelphia. (All Pennsylvania state residents can obtain a Free Library card too!)

What type of card should I get?

→ The Free Library offers the option to choose between a physical or digital library card based on your needs.

I want to check out materials (books, movies, music, magazines, etc.), use free public computers and/or wireless internet, attend an event, or take advantage of other Free Library resources.

→ A physical library card is your ticket to everything the Free Library has to offer. To obtain a physical card, visit any Free Library location to fill out an application — and be sure to bring identification or proof of eligibility!

I want to use the Free Library's electronic resources from home.

→ You can acquire a digital card online (valid for 60 days until you verify your account) and receive access to our resources database instantly. You will not be able to check out library materials with a digital card, but you can visit your local library (with proper identification) and obtain a physical card to do so.

I'm not sure if I have a Free Library card already, or I signed up years ago and can't remember my card number.

→ You can find out through our Forgot Library Card Number form.

I have my Free Library card number, but I can't remember my PIN.

→ Try our Forgot PIN Form.

Already have your card? Help a friend or family member secure theirs today!

This Library Card Signup Month, the Free Library is offering our limited-edition library card design celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip hop! Get yours while supplies last at your local Free Library location.

Hi, if you lost your library card, you can always get another at your neighborhood Free Library location. If your digital card has expired, you can sign up for another one online -- just be sure to verify your account!
