We are so excited to announce that American Sign Language is now available on Mango Languages!

American Sign Language (often called ASL) is used by Deaf and hard-of-hearing people to communicate. It is a vital part of Deaf culture, the primary language for millions of Americans, and one of the most-used languages in the United States. ASL is also part of our 2024 One Book One Philadelphia selection, True Biz by Sara Nović, so keep an eye out for upcoming programming focused around the language.

Now, anyone with a Free Library card can begin their own journey into learning ASL through Mango Languages! To begin your American Sign Language learning journey, visit the Mango Languages page on our website. Once you’ve logged in, search for American Sign Language and click on the links to be taken to the available resources. Make sure you register for an account so you can keep track of your progress!

There’s a total of 30 different modules for learners to work through, focusing on the basics of communication in ASL. Included alongside these language lessons are Deaf cultural lessons. We recommend giving yourself about 30 minutes to focus each time you sit down to study. Try the "Magic Mirror" feature to model and practice alongside the instructors to get instant feedback!
