Department Highlights: Interlibrary Loan

By Administrator RSS Mon, August 5, 2024

Since Parkway Central Library opened in 1927, patrons have had free and open access to its rich and unique collections, expanding services, and professionally trained and welcoming staff. The robust programs and collections available are impressive, but some patrons may not be familiar with all of them. To promote these resources, we've asked library staff to highlight their subject departments and the patron resources they offer to help shed light on all the benefits of becoming a patron of the Free Library of Philadelphia.

If the Free Library doesn’t have what you’re looking for, or if you need it in a different format (VHS, large print, etc.) or language, register with Interlibrary Loan to borrow materials from another library system. Patrons aged 18+ are eligible for Interlibrary Loan services. After registration, you can request books, textbooks, music, videos, government documents, or audiobooks; these will be sent to whatever branch you choose. You may also request newspaper or magazine articles that can be mailed directly to your home address. Patrons can have up to three active requests at a time.

Interlibrary loans are almost always free (if there’s a fee, you'll be asked to agree to it before being charged) and take about as long as a hold. The wait time can be as little as three days to up to a month to receive requested materials depending on the location and availability of the item. Check out the Free Library's Interlibrary Loan FAQs page for more information about the borrowing process.

For any questions, contact the Interlibrary Loan department at illrequest@freelibrary.org or 215-686-5360.
