View Life Through the Lens: Photography Without Borders at the Free Library

By Anthony T. RSS Tue, July 23, 2024

Photography is a powerful outlet for expression and creativity in young people. Teens aged 12–18 can explore their abilities as photographers at the Kensington and Lillian Marrero branches of the Free Library this summer, where Photography Without Borders will host three fun, hands-on classes in the coming weeks.

Photography Without Borders is a local organization committed to helping North Philadelphia youth in the Olney and Kensington neighborhoods tell powerful, personal stories using traditional and digital photographic techniques. They will visit Free Library locations on Wednesdays this summer for CAPTURE! Photography at the Free Library — a free three-part series on the methods and meanings behind the art form.

The July 24 class, "Portraits," will cover the basics of skillfully capturing likenesses in one of the oldest and most popular forms of photography. On July 31, students will learn how different printing techniques can drastically change the end product of a photograph in "Alternative Processes." The final workshop on August 7, "Making Meaning," will explore photography’s potential as a storytelling medium.

The Kensington Library classes will run from 12:00-1:00 p.m., and the Lillian Marrero Library classes will take place from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Necessary equipment will be provided.
