First Fleisher Collection Scholarship Awarded to Philadelphia Composer and Pianist, Rhyuhn Green

By Gillian R. RSS Mon, October 7, 2024

The Edwin A. Fleisher Collection of Orchestral Music is excited to announce our new partnership with Play on Philly (POP). We are particularly enthusiastic about this alliance as POP echoes Edwin Fleisher’s original concept in 1909 of assisting young Philadelphians with their musical education with his pioneering Symphony Club. POP's exemplary programs and initiatives show K–12 students who lack access to music education how life skills and academic achievement can be enhanced through music.

In recognition of POP’s Marian Anderson Young Artist Program, the Fleisher Collection has committed to providing one Anderson Artist with a $1,000 scholarship. A new Anderson Artist will be selected each year for the next five years. The first recipient of the Edwin A. Fleisher Collection scholarship is Rhyuhn Green, a Philadelphia composer and pianist who started his studies at The Juilliard School this semester. Born with a highly advanced musical intuition, Rhyuhn began his musical journey when he was just two years old. He shaped his artistry and technique by playing piano privately at the Curtis Institute and went on to make his solo Carnegie Hall debut at age 12. He serves with Isaac Cortijo as Founder and Co-Artistic/Executive Director of Creatiistiq, a non-profit organization that supports communities in need through concerts. Read (and listen!) more about Rhyuhn on his website.

Our sincere congratulations go out to Rhyuhn who wrote to us that:

"Art should be unifying, a beacon of light to those who are lost, and a spotlight on the narratives of people who do not have a voice to share their story. In a world as divided as today’s, art is more important now than ever."

We anticipate great things as he continues his musical adventure!

About the Marian Anderson Young Artist Program

POP launched the Marian Anderson Young Artist Program in memory of world-renowned contralto and Philadelphia-daughter, Marian Anderson. The program supports students, also known as Anderson Artists, in their musical studies through private lessons, individual advisement, instrument loans, and college and career counseling. This program aims to serve those individuals whose communities have historically been excluded from the highest levels of musical excellence due to structural barriers in our country. Anderson Artists and their families commit themselves to the dedication necessary to excel in the fields of classical and jazz music. Anderson Artists’ programming is tuition-free for accepted students; a registration fee is required upon acceptance.
