Women and Investing: A Virtual Panel Discussion in Celebration of Women’s History Month
Virtual
Vanguard and The Free Library of Philadelphia present a lively virtual panel discussion in celebration of Women's History Month. Sharon Hill, Ph.D. Senior Portfolio Manager and Head of Alpha Equity – Global & Income within Vanguard’s Quantitative Equity Group will moderate a panel discussion with three women who are prominent in their fields. The discussion will cover topics ranging from whether women exhibit investment patterns that differ from men’s, what it’s like being part of a team that is in charge of billions of dollars, and how they navigate a male-dominated field. The panelists are:
- Jennie Huang, Ph.D., a research economist in Vanguard Investment Strategy Group. Her research interests are behavioral and experimental economics, decisionmaking, investor behavior, and the impact of gender on investing behavior and financial decision-making. She will discuss the gender differences her research has uncovered among Vanguard’s investors. Some of her results contradict the age-old belief that women shy away from risk. In addition to providing some insights on those theories, she will share her opinion on why a woman's approach, if there is one, might be prudent. Ms. Huang received a Ph.D.in applied economics from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a B.A. in economics from the University of Chicago, after which she worked as an economics consultant.
- Christine Franquin manages billions of dollars in indexed assets at Vanguard and is a principal and senior portfolio manager in the Vanguard Equity Index Group. She will describe the difference between investing in the stock market by indexing versus buying and selling single stocks in an investment account. She will also share her perspective on the importance of having a disciplined and objective approach to investing. Before joining Vanguard in 2000, she was an attorney in Belgium. She earned a B.A. from the Universitaire Faculteiten Sint-Ignatius Antwerpen in Belgium, an M.S. in finance from Clark University, and a law degree from the University of Liège in Belgium.
- Gemma Wright-Casparius, MBA, principal, and senior portfolio manager at Vanguard, where she heads the actively managed Treasury/Inflation team. With more than 30 years of experience at some of the most prestigious firms in the U.S., Ms. Wright-Casparius will provide her perspective on the current investment environment and her expectations for inflation and the economy, as it relates to the prospects for women. Ms. Wright-Casparius earned a B.B.A. in economics and finance and an M.B.A. from the Bernard M. Baruch College of the City University of New York.
