Uncovering the Real James Bond at The Free Library of Philadelphia
Virtual
In researching his recent book, The Real James Bond, about Philadelphian James Bond, whose identity was stolen by Ian Fleming, author Jim Wright found a goldmine in the Free Library's Rare Book Department. In the Mary Wickham Bond Papers on the "real Jame Bond," Wright unearthed all sorts of rare images and documents pertaining to the ornithologist Bond, a noted ornithologist -- including a photo of Bond (wielding a double-barreled shotgun) and a toy Aston-Marton DB5 (complete with ejector seat). The presentation will highlight rarely seen objects from the Free Library's collection. Wright, who was raised just outside of Philadelphia, is the author of several books about nature -- and sports biographies of a couple of athletes named Bobby Clarke and Mike Schmidt.
